July Purposeful Living: Week 1: Fullness in God's Presence

Updated: Jul 5

As we begin our July journey on the theme, Embracing God's Perfecting Work in Our Lives, we begin with an important truth: the foundation of a purposeful and fulfilling life is God's presence.
July, the seventh month of the year, often reminds us of the biblical themes of fullness, completion, and God's perfect work. As we reflect on God's perfecting work in our lives this month, it is natural to focus on outcomes.
We think about completed goals, answered prayers, fulfilled dreams, and long-awaited breakthroughs. We all celebrate accomplishments. Completing a degree, reaching a professional milestone, serving others well, or achieving personal goals are meaningful gifts. Yet Scripture reminds us that these achievements are most meaningful when they are built upon the foundation of God's presence.
It is in God's presence that we receive the wisdom, strength, peace, and direction to live purposefully and pursue excellence.
"For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding." (Proverbs 2:6 NKJV).
Before God completes His work around us, He often desires to deepen His work within us.
Fullness in God's Presence
Many people spend years pursuing fulfillment through accomplishments, possessions, promotions, relationships, or personal success. While these blessings are gifts from God, they were never intended to be our ultimate source of satisfaction.
King David understood this truth when he wrote:
"You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore." (Psalm 16:11NKJV)
Notice where David found fullness, not in a position, an achievement, or a possession, but in God's presence. Throughout Scripture, we see men and women who discovered that God's presence sustained them through every season. Moses valued God's presence more than the Promised Land itself. David sought God's presence in both victories and hardships. The Apostle Paul learned to be content regardless of his circumstances because his relationship with Christ remained his greatest treasure. We will explore these examples more fully in the upcoming devotional.
Perhaps you entered this year believing fulfillment would come when a certain prayer was answered, a goal was reached, or a situation changed. Yet God may be inviting you to discover that His presence is enough, even while parts of your journey remain or seem unfinished.
The beautiful reality is that God's perfecting work begins not with what He gives us, but with how closely we walk with Him.
When we prioritize His presence, we gain peace for today's challenges, strength for tomorrow's uncertainties, wisdom for life's decisions, and confidence that He is continuing the good work He has begun in us.
Pause and Reflect
Where have I been looking for fulfillment outside of God's presence?
Have I been pursuing God's blessings more than His presence?
How has God's presence sustained me during difficult seasons?
What would it look like for me to spend more intentional time with God this week?
The Word of God reminds us:
"Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." (James 4:8 NKJV)
Sometimes the greatest step toward a purposeful and fulfilling life is simply drawing closer to the One who created us.
Prayer for Fullness in God's Presence
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the gift of Your presence. Forgive me for the times I have looked to accomplishments, possessions, or circumstances for fulfillment instead of seeking You.
Draw me closer to You and help me discover the fullness of joy that comes from walking with You each day. Teach me to trust Your perfecting work in my life and to find peace in Your presence, regardless of my circumstances.
As I spend time with You, fill me with Your wisdom, strength, and direction so that I may live purposefully, work diligently, and pursue excellence in all that You have entrusted to me. Empower me to be a light in every area of my life: in my home, workplace, education, career, ministry, and community, so that others may see Your love and glorify You.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
