Purposeful Living September Featured Reflection by Dr. Val titled "The Seed of Love: Small Beginnings, Fruitful Purpose," featuring an open Bible, a seedling.

Featured Reflection by Dr. Val

As we continue reflecting on this month's theme, The Fruits of a Purposeful Life, I would like to focus on one of the greatest lessons Jesus taught His disciples: Love.

Love often begins with small, ordinary acts that God uses to accomplish extraordinary purposes.

The Seed of Love.

In John 13:34–35, Jesus was preparing His disciples for His departure. Knowing that He would soon go to the cross, He first humbled Himself by washing their feet, demonstrating that true love serves others. Then He gave them a new command:

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another." (John 13:34, NKJV)

The standard was no longer to love others as we love ourselves, but to love others as Christ has loved us.

Jesus was not asking His disciples to begin with grand gestures. Just moments earlier, He had performed a simple act of service by washing their feet. It was quiet, humble, and away from the crowds, yet it became one of the most powerful lessons He ever taught. From that small beginning, Jesus revealed a fruitful purpose—that His disciples would reflect His love to the world.

The early church embraced this command wholeheartedly. Believers met together, cared for one another, shared what they had, and ensured that no one was in need. Their love created a community so compelling that people were drawn to Christ daily.

Historian and sociologist Rodney Stark observes that the compassion shown by early Christians contributed significantly to Christianity's remarkable growth.

As believers cared for one another and for those around them, the love of Christ became visible in practical ways. What began with twelve disciples eventually grew into a movement that transformed the world.

The same principle remains true today.

Love is one of the nine fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23). Like every fruit, it begins as a seed. It grows through everyday choices—choosing patience over irritation, kindness over criticism, forgiveness over resentment, and service over selfishness.

The seed of Love may begin with a kind word, a listening ear, a sincere prayer, a meal shared with someone in need, an encouraging message, or a quiet act of service. These actions may seem small, but God often uses them to produce fruit far beyond what we can see.

Jesus concluded His teaching with these words:

"By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." (John 13:35, NKJV)

Our love is more than an expression of kindness; it is our witness to the world. Through the way we love one another, people encounter the reality of Christ. In many ways, love is the identifying mark of every believer.

As you go through this week, never underestimate the power of one small act of love. Just as Jesus began with a basin and a towel before giving a command that would impact generations, He can use our simple expressions of love to reveal His presence and accomplish His purpose in the lives of others.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for loving us with everlasting, unconditional love. Thank You for sending Jesus, who not only taught us how to love but demonstrated that love through humble service and the ultimate sacrifice of His life.

Forgive us for moments of indifference, selfishness, impatience, and division. Fill our hearts afresh with Your Holy Spirit, and let the fruit of love grow abundantly within us. Help us to love others as Christ has loved us, so that our lives may reflect Your grace and draw others to You. In Jesus' name,

Amen.
