As September comes to an end, I have been reflecting on the journey we have taken together through the Fruit of the Spirit and the different seasons God uses to develop His character in us.

Over the past few weeks, we have seen that purposeful living is not just about discovering where God is taking us. It is also about paying attention to who we are becoming along the way.

Last week, our devotional focused on patience and self-control and how God often develops these qualities through responsibility and service.

Patience is rarely developed when everything happens according to our timetable. It grows through waiting, relationships, responsibilities, disappointments, and circumstances that require us to persevere.

Self-control is developed in many of those same places. We may not always control what happens around us, but through the work of the Holy Spirit, we can learn to govern our words, emotions, attitudes, and responses.

I have seen this in my own life.

As I share in the full devotional, my mother, Mama Jane, was one of the most patient people I knew. When I was younger, my siblings and I sometimes thought she was too patient. I certainly did not think I wanted that level of patience!

But life has a way of changing our perspective.

Marriage, career, leadership, ministry, relationships, and responsibilities have helped me understand that patience is not weakness. It takes tremendous strength and self-control to respond with wisdom and grace when circumstances test us.

The Fruit of the Spirit we read about in Galatians 5:22–23 should increasingly become visible in how we live.

And that leads us to our final reflection for September:

What kind of fruit will our lives leave behind?

Jesus said that He chose and appointed us to "go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain" (John 15:16, NKJV).

That challenges us to think beyond accomplishments.

Degrees, titles, positions, awards, possessions, and professional achievements all have their place. But eventually, positions are filled by someone else, accomplishments become part of our history, and seasons come to an end.

What remains?

Perhaps some of the most meaningful fruit of our lives will be found in the people we have loved, encouraged, taught, mentored, served, prayed for, and helped along the way.

I see that kind of fruit in my mother's life. Her peaceful spirit, patience, faith, perseverance, and service continue to influence me long after her earthly journey ended. I'm writing the details in her forthcoming memoir.

That is the fruit that remains. And it reminds me that legacy is not only what people remember about us. Legacy is also what continues growing in others because we lived.

As we close our September journey, perhaps we should ask ourselves:

What is God developing in me through my present responsibilities?

Is the Fruit of the Spirit becoming more visible in the way I live, lead, and serve?

And what am I planting in others today that may continue bearing fruit tomorrow?

Purposeful living is not only about fulfilling our own calling. It is allowing God to shape us so deeply that our lives become a blessing to others.

May we continue to grow in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control; and may the fruit God produces through our lives be fruit that remains.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for every season You use to shape us. Continue to produce the Fruit of Your Spirit in our lives. Develop patience and self-control in us through our responsibilities, relationships, and opportunities to serve.

Help us to remain connected to You so that our lives produce fruit that brings You glory and blesses others. May we not become so focused on accomplishments that we overlook character, service, and the people You have entrusted to us.

Teach us to live purposefully, lead intentionally for impact, and faithfully fulfill our God-given calling. May something of eternal value remain because we allowed You to work in us and through us. In Jesus' name, Amen.

September Closing Reflection

A fulfilled life is not measured only by what we accomplish, but by the fruit God produces through us that continues to bless others.
